1870-CC Seated Dollar PCGS AU58
The first Seated Dollar minted in Carson City, by the end of 1870 12,462 coins were struck. Most of them did not survive the 30 mile journey by wagon to the railhead in Reno, Nevada without picking up considerable bagmarks.
Draped in an even cloud-gray patination on the obverse and reverse, the coin displays strong reflectivity, with prooflike qualities especially in the protected areas around the devices. The coin is boldly struck, with virtually no evidence of circulation save for slight traces of rub on Liberty on the obverse and the Eagle's wings on the reverse. A fully-defined central design and lack of noticeable abrasions is a plus for this challenging first year of issue survivor. We suspect this coin did not pass muster at CAC because of an ancient dip or light cleaning, as there are some hardly noticable and easily overlooked hairlines blanketed by the warm patina that glows in the light.
