1776 Continental Currency Dollar PCGS XF40 CAC
An iconic and historically significant artifact of the American Revolution, this 1776 Continental Currency Dollar is a rare and coveted piece of early American numismatics. Struck during the formative years of the United States, this coin features the distinctive design attributed to Benjamin Franklin, with the obverse displaying a sundial encircled by the inscription "FUGIO" (I fly) and "MIND YOUR BUSINESS". The reverse bears a chain of 13 linked circles, each representing one of the original colonies, with "AMERICAN CONGRESS" and "WE ARE ONE" encircling the design, dated "1776."
This specimen exhibits moderate wear consistent with its circulated state, yet retains sharp details in the sundial, chain links, and inscriptions. The pewter composition has developed a pleasing, even gray patina with hints of toning. The Continental Currency Dollar is not a true circulating coin but rather a pattern or store card issued during the Revolutionary War, with an uncertain mintage and production details. It was believed that these coins were intended to announce the sovereignty of the United Colonies and to support the value of Continental paper currency, however recent research has doubts about this theory. There are claims that it was a token produced in eastern europe, purportedly as a souvenir, as there is no historical data to support these pieces being commishioned in the colonies. An interesting and storied conundrum indeed.
Struck in pewter, this example is among the most iconic, representing the fledgling nation’s aspirations for a unified currency. A CAC sticker confirms the quality of this piece.
