1852 United States Assay Office of Gold $50. K-13. R-4+. 887 THOUS. PCGS XF45
Scarce and ultra-desirable, the historic $50 slug is one of the most iconic issues from the Gold Rush era. A pleasing honey-gold color blankets both sides and the surfaces are on the upper end of the originality spectrum, possibly an ancient light cleaning that hardly interferes with its overall appearance. Strike appears above average and the obverse detail is terrific for the grade, with minor weakness around the borders and the central reverse design, which is common for the type. The corners are in pretty good shape, with a minor bruise at 7:00 on the reverse, though we have seen much worse on higher graded examples. Overall, this is a fantastic value slug that stands tall against other non-cac examples, and we would not have been surprised if it came to us with CAC approval. The lack thereof enables us to offer the coin at a lovely price, all things considered.
